Ryan Church Awarded STEM Premier Dashboard Scholarship

We are proud to award multiple STEM Premier scholarships each year. We understand the critical importance of financial aid, and seek to help our students as they pursue their academic and professional dreams.

The STEM Premier Dashboard Scholarship - awarded quarterly - asks students to provide their best answer to a certain question. The student with the most impressive, unique, or intriguing answer is selected as the winner.

This time around, we asked applicants to submit their best answer to the following question: Describe a teacher or course that drew your interest to a certain STEM career or area of study.

Although we had many fantastic applicants, we could only choose one. And so we are pleased to announce Ryan Church from North Carolina as our most recent Dashboard Scholar!

Ryan recently graduated from John T. Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC where he was extremely active in his chapter of HOSA - Future Health Professionals; as a senior, he was also elected President of his chapter. He was voted captain of his soccer team twice, and helped lead his teammates to back-to-back conference titles. He will be enrolling at the University of South Carolina this fall.

We caught up with Ryan for a little Q & A so we could get to know him a little better. Here’s what he had to say:

1. Something you wouldn't know about me is...that I love thrift shopping and most of my shirts are from thrift stores.

2. For fun, I like to...play soccer and go to the beach with friends.

3. Two people I wish I could meet are...Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Bob Ross because I love their shows and I feel like they both have lots of knowledge and interesting life advice to share.

4. The best teachers I've ever had were...Mrs. Coston and Mr. Terzian. Both of them were great and gave me the passion to pursue biology in college and as a career.

5. The last app I downloaded on my phone was...the University of South Carolina app, because I love my future school.

6. After high school, my next step is...to attend the University of South Carolina to study biology.

7. In ten years, I see myself...either in dental school or pursuing a biological research career.

8. My greatest dream is...to spend my days in a lab working to discover new things that will benefit the world.

9. The thing I like the most about STEM Premier is...that it connected me with many scholarship opportunities and gave me the chance to get myself out there and be rewarded for my hard work.

As part of his scholarship, Ryan will also be awarded the exclusive STEM Premier Dashboard Scholarship Digital Badge.

Congratulations Ryan, good luck as you begin your college career. Go Gamecocks!

STEM Premier Connections: Inspiring the Future of Healthcare

smriti.jpg

STEM Premier isn’t just about recruiting. It’s also about helping students fulfill their dreams. Often times, connecting a student with a life-changing opportunity is more impactful than connecting them with a school or employer.

Smriti Moorjani, a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, has never doubted her ambition to be a doctor. It’s a goal which inspired her to get involved with HOSA - Future Health Professionals when she was only fourteen years old. “A majority of upperclassmen in my high school were involved in HOSA,” she recalls, “they shared their experiences in this organization, which was really inspiring to learn about.”

Regular membership in the organization quickly led to more involved roles, as she eventually became the organization’s Historian for the entire state of New Jersey. She credits this role as having helped her develop as a leader.

It was Smriti's engagement with HOSA which led her to STEM Premier. “I was interested in applying for certain opportunities in HOSA, and the application was available through STEM Premier.”

One of those opportunities was applying to the HOSA 2017 Public Health Leadership Scholars Program, a unique one-week program through the US Department of Health and Human Services. By being selected, Smriti was able to spend a week in Washington D.C. with like-minded peers gaining knowledge about public health. She met with public health leaders, toured facilities, and discussed a variety of relevant and pressing topics.

“By exposing us to the many sectors within public health, this program helped us better understand the field and how we can incorporate public health in our future careers,” she explains. “At the end of the program, we created final presentations that summarized our experiences and what we learned from this program.”

Smriti also took advantage of STEM Premier to apply for a $2,000 National HOSA Scholarship, which she was awarded.

She especially appreciates how the STEM Premier platform tailors her user experience based on her profile. “By updating information like my coursework and experiences, it matches me with opportunities.”

Her passion for health care doesn’t end with HOSA. Over the years, Smriti has become involved with a plethora of health-related organizations which have helped her refine her skills and knowledge through service, competition, and mentorship.

At such a young age, she is passionately committed to helping others. And there is a little doubt that she will soon be making an impact on a much larger scale.

Learn a bit more about Smriti in her own words:

Something you wouldn't know about me is...that I enjoy photography.

For fun, I like to….listen to music; it’s a huge stress-reliever!

If I could meet anyone in the world, past or present, I would want to meet…Dr. Sanjay Gupta. I am inspired by his dedication to the healthcare field and want to learn more about his experiences.

The best teacher I’ve ever had was….Mr. Pfeffer, my high school physical science teacher. He is both an outstanding teacher and amazing mentor.

The last app I downloaded on my phone was….Netflix.

In ten years, I see myself….completing my education and training to become a doctor.

My greatest dream is...to wholeheartedly contribute to improving others’ lives.

Our Latest Dashboard Scholarship Winner Announced

We are proud to award multiple STEM Premier scholarships each year. We understand the critical importance of financial aid, and seek to help our students as they pursue their academic and professional dreams.

The STEM Premier Dashboard Scholarship - awarded quarterly - asks students to provide their best answer to a certain question. The student with the most impressive, unique, or intriguing answer is selected as the winner.

This time around, we asked applicants to submit their best answer to the following question: What kind of technology do you think will make the biggest impact in the next decade and why?

We had many fantastic applicants, and we are pleased to announce the winner...drumroll please…

Vy Le from Wichita, Kansas!

Vy is a sophomore at Northeast Magnet High School in Wichita interested in the field of medicine. Her college interests include Stanford, Harvard, the University of California-San Francisco, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and the University of Kansas.

We caught up with Vy for a little Q & A so we could get to know her a little better. Here’s what she had to say:

1. Something you wouldn't know about me is...that I love to listen to music (preferably classical/edm/kpop), but I don't have any specific artist/band as a favorite!

2. For fun, I like to...watch documentaries, cooking, or house design videos! I enjoy learning about history, watching people make food, or seeing someone design a house. Also, I love to learn new songs on the violin, whether it be modern music or classical, by just listening to the song!

3. If I could meet anyone in the world, I'd want to meet...Shinya Yamanaka! He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2012 for discovering that any mature cell has the genetic information to become a stem cell. This means a skin cell could be reprogrammed into a stem cell, which could potentially become any cell in the organism. This is super important (and cool) because any damaged organ or limb can be regrown with the same genetic information as the rest of the body!

4. The best teacher I've ever had was...I don't think I could just say one teacher. All of my teachers have been amazing and have done their job wonderfully! I've come to realize that teachers work super hard to educate students, and I appreciate all of my teachers' effort and hard work to succeed in doing so!

5. The last app I downloaded on my phone was..."Pocket Anatomy"! My sister had told me about it and I was quite interested because I figured it would be very helpful for me since I take a "human body systems" class! I'm still exploring the app, but I love how it lets you choose how much is on the body, like which layer you want to see (muscles, nerves, bone, etc).

6. After high school, my next step is...to go to a university! I don't know exactly what I intend to be at this time, but I know I want to help people medically, and so I will most likely major in something like biology!

7. In ten years, I see myself...graduating medical school with a M.D, starting my training to get a Ph.D!

8. My greatest dream is...for medical assistance to be available to everyone who needs it. I believe everyone should be able to get medical help if they need it. Money seems to be the biggest issue, but with the help of many charities and volunteers, we can all move a step further into making this dream a reality!

9. The thing I like the most about STEM Premier is...that it helps students organize everything in one account! Students can easily put down all the information they want colleges to know, such as experiences, achievements, and test scores. They can also share their profile with anyone, so it is way more efficient way than having to try and retype every achievement each time they might need to showcase their work! I guess you could say its organization skills are on point! :)

As part of her scholarship, Vy will also be awarded the exclusive STEM Premier Dashboard Scholarship Digital Badge.

Congratulations Vy! We have no doubt that you will make a big difference in medicine one day. Maybe even win your own Nobel Peace Prize!

Shortcuts to Scholarships: STEM Premier Teams Up with Red Kite

What if we could give students twenty billion dollars to go to college? That would be pretty cool, right?

Well, we can’t exactly give them twenty billion dollars, but we can do the next best thing, which is to directly connect them with $20 billion worth of scholarships.

STEM Premier and Red Kite have teamed up to help our students find and apply for scholarships that are tailor-fit for them based their interests, grades, and other STEM Premier profile information.

There are thousands of scholarships, grants, and fellowships out there for students to apply to. That’s great! However, it can be difficult and tedious for students to find the financial aid opportunities that are right for them, especially when the college search itself can seem like a full-time job.

Red Kite has taken the hard work out of the scholarship application process by automatically matching students on their platform with scholarship opportunities that are unique to each student based on their profile information. The result is that students can much more easily find and apply for scholarships that make sense for them. Students can track their applications and see which ones they have been awarded. They can then use that information to see how close they are to affording the cost of attendance for their preferred schools by using Red Kite’s college cost comparisons.

Red Kite also provides information about loans and other useful tips regarding financial aid, courtesy of their blog and downloadable guides - such as “Financial Aid 101.”

By integrating Red Kite’s financial aid matching engine with our platform, STEM Premier students will be provided with a new feature on their personal dashboard: recommended scholarships based on their unique profile information. The more complete a student’s profile, the more refined their scholarship list will be.

The student’s search for their perfect college can already be stressful enough, even without worrying about how to pay for it. With Red Kite, we are happy to give students the tools they need to make this process a lot easier!
